Nasty soldier bug

caterpillar predator.jpg

This photograph was sent by Bob in Blenheim.
This is Schellenberg’s soldier bug. Oechalia schellenbergii
It is in the same family as green vegetable bug. It’s considered useful by some as it attacks pest caterpillars on crops. It is termed native, also found in Australia.
Thanks to Leonie Clunie, Landcare Research, for identification.

Schellenbergs Soldier Bug is one of New Zealands most important predators, especially in the control of the Eucalyptus Tortoise Beetle.

There seems to be the inclination for folk to destroy every shield bug they see these days, because of the reputation of the Green Vegetable Bug,but our native Green Shield Bug which looks very similar does not attack garden plants. Our native bugs are all very important to maintaining the equilibrium of the natural ecosystems here. We must protect them, even if they do kill pretty Monarchs.
