I notice there isn’t much courtship between the male and female! I’ve been horrified a couple of times when I put a new female outside and a male will swoop down and carry her off :O Today I put a male out and another male came down and must have thought ‘he’ was a female. I did rescue my new male and he seems very happy to be back inside :)

Once when just getting a new female to fly a monarch male twice her size seized her and forced her to the ground, then flew off with her. I saw her resting on a plant, that evening getting over the shock. So took her inside to have a nights peace and let her go. The same male found her again and they stayed together in a pine tree and that is the last I saw of them.

Is there any way of knowing that eggs are fertile?
Does the female start laying eggs even if she has’nt met a male?
