other forums I visit have a check box to alert me bt email when a post has been added to a thread I am following. Is this possible here, and if not currently, can it be achieved? I'm not sure otherrwise hw to keep track of a developing thread.

Not available currently, Wendy, although you can select the RSS feed for this topic (not sure how that works – someone else will be able to tell you).

It would be great to have it for sure.
