Hello, about 15 caterpillars started hatching last night and when I woke up this morning they were all hanging from silk and had turned black. What is going on? This plant has fed a healthy caterpillar before that is now in chrysalis stage on a separate plant that it moved to. Is there something wrong with the plant?
    Thanks!

Hi there maybe it is the virus that some succumb to -caterpillars turn liquidy and some butterflies have deformed wings from it -maybe Jacqui can help with that

Have you fed the plant prior to the hatching? I’ve had caterpillars die after I fed the plant with a commercial plant food.

Hi, the caterpillars hatched from the eggs and died straight away. They were all on the same plant. Could the plant have been poisoned somehow?

Very weird, AmyRose. Whereabouts are you?

When you say “hatch” I’m not sure what you mean. Eggs hatch. Caterpillars shed their skin four times, and then, the 5th time, they pupate or form a chrysalis.

Had they all been feeding on the same swan plant?
