Snails are a real pest to young swan plants. You think that no seedlings are coming up… then you realise that they are, but the snails and slugs are getting to them before they make much headway.

Not sure why that tag didn’t stick, Gaynor. I guess not everything is a success… 🙂

2 days ago I tagged a monarch to release, but found the tag hard to stick to wing. I re caught the monarch and gently pressed the tag onto the wing again. This time was a success. —– but today while out checking the castles, I walked passed the ‘maize’ coloured Buddleia, and there it was on the buddleia minus it’s tag. Why, would this happen?? I recognised it because of the slight colour change of wing where the tag had been. Also had to euthanize two monarchs because 1 had deformed legs and could not stand . Had been caught in a spider web., and the other kept falling to one side, and ending up on it’s back. Put them in the freezer. Has anyone else got problems of baby snails in castles eating swan plants?

It really is good to have more people tagging than less SO encourage others my contacting your local nwspaper and ask them to run a story. I am happy if they contact me for quotes. But they WILL want a photo – so if you don’t want to have your name/photo in the paper see if you can get a neighbour’s child etc to do it.

It is not good to have too many tagged monarchs’ photos in the news. It is very tempting for someone to report in a sighting once they’ve got the number. However, the first hoax one we got a few years ago was of a monarch that was tagged in Tauranga and reported in the NZ Herald (I think). Some wag reported seeing the monarch in a multi-storey building in Welington’s CBD. An impossibility! When I checked out the report they were embarrassed and didn’t want to talk with me. I deleted that sighting.

So if someone is taking photos of your tagged monarchs, use the same one in all photos it will make it easier if we have to check out hoax sightings.

See there are only two of us tagging here in Gisborne. I have told several to get in contact, re tagging but they obviously have not. Shame.I have just tagged and released another 4. (2 F and 2 M )

Great to see so many are tagging. No Pukekohe. I would like to try. Perhaps there is someone local out there (Tuakau) who could help.
I have a lovely lot of caterpillars, a chrysalis & many more nearly ready. The 4 or more resident butterflies are busy each day. I will share on Neighbourly.
