TerryParticipantHi Jacqui
I had heard of tinyurl.com. but thanks for that info, you learn something new each day. I will try to remember to use that next time.

JacquiModeratorHi Terry – thanks for this. It’s brilliant, didn’t realise there were so many.
Here’s something else that may be of interest. There are other sites like this but they’re very helpful when you want to paste in a long url.
You go to tinyurl.com (or there are other sites) and put in your long url that often gets affected by the “wrap” function on some forums, email programs etc, and you get a much shorter url to paste into your forum, email etc. When you use that url, it directs you to the proper link! Very clever.
Cheers

TerryParticipantHi Jacqui
The answer to your red admiral type butterflies of the world question below. I don’t know if this is complete but it’s quite comprehensive.
There are some pics on google images of some of the butterflies mentioned on the above site that didn’t have pics on it
Hope this helps

TerryParticipantHi Milkweed
Monarchs are not native to the UK and it is far too cold in winter. Southern Spain and the Canary islands are closest to us for stock. Also the foodplants are not native to the UK and not many gardeners grow milkweeds like they do in NZ

YvonneWallisParticipantThanks for the clarification, Terry, what a beautiful photo and what a really beautiful little butterfly indeed!!
June 3, 2010 at 3:54 AM #24475
milkweedParticipantTerry, One question for you, where are the Monarchs? Or are they too rare for you to breed in the UK?

TerryParticipantHi all
Yvonne, The common blue “male” is much brighter than the NZ grass blue. The adonis blue is even more spectacular.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/88/208866014_58a42f013f.jpg not my photo by the way!!!
Jacqui, I only bred the Orange tips for 3 years. they are very easy, but univoltine. So one brood a year and then hibernate until the following spring as a pupae. you can only tell the pupse sex when they colour up in the spring, the males having the orange tips. I only breed NZ yellow admirals and Reds when they are available, I just can’t cope with too many species. I will have to do some research to find out how many Red Admirals there are in the world.
hshingles, I am surprised you prefered the female orange tips as they are just white with small black tips.
Butterfly, thanks for your comments!!May 31, 2010 at 9:10 AM #24451
JaneParticipantFabulous photos! Love the ‘ova and 1st instar Red Admirals’ pic, and the Purple Emperors and Clouded Yellow butterfly…thanks Terry

hshinglesParticipantthey are all beautiful, just love those female orange tips
May 30, 2010 at 10:24 PM #24442
JacquiModeratorWow – Terry – fantastic. Love the Orange Tips. Do you still breed them? What flower are they on? Perhaps a single stock? How can you tell the difference between a male and female when they’re in the pupal stage?
How many different butterflies do you breed?
Love the Canary (Indian) Red Admiral (Vanessa vulcania) too. Do you know how many different Red Admirals there are in the world? Someone asked me the other day…

YvonneWallisParticipantBEAUTIFUL! Thanks for sharing you have some truly lovely photo’s – the male common blue is really gorgeous, the ones I have photographed have not been this vivid and are more a softer purple.
Regards,
Yvonne -
