    Hi all

As per the request in the newsletter we are making a start on compiling the data for the new website. I am uploading templates which will help with gathering the information we require in an orderly manner, so that the information can be easily edited, standardised and uploaded.

Templates are here (a Microsoft Word file).

    https://www.monarch.org.nz/2008/10/23/templates/

Right now we need people to help with this – you may have a good knowledge of a species (lepidoptera, pest, parasite, host plant or nectar plant) or you might like to learn more about them.

So far these people have volunteered:

    Norm Twigge – NZ Admirals

    Mike Lusk – Forest Ringlet

    Ange Gibbons – Coppers

    Clair

But we need more people, please. If there is something you’d particularly like to cover, please email me – jacqui@monarch.org.nz.

We suggest that you visit the library and search the internet for information to fill in the ‘holes’ in the template. Also the links on our website might be productive, especially BUGZ:

    http://entdocs.landcareresearch.co.nz/WebForms/SearchForm.aspx

    There are five templates:

    1. Lepidoptera

    2. Predator

    3. Parasite

    4. Host plant

    5. Nectar plant

I have started completing the host plant database for ‘Tropical Milkweed’ so you can see the sort of things we want to have. It will be fine to have gaps and these can be filled in later. We are not covering natives as there is a great website already covering that: http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/

What we need now is more people to help. Also, if you need it, I have here a copy of George Gibbs’ definitive work NZ Butterflies, which will give you much of the information you need.

I want to say a big vote of thanks to those of you that are helping me the website work. T H A N K Y O U. 🙂

If you would like a job, please email me. But here’s a way that everyone can assist… If you are on a page and notice an error (typo, plain mistruth, OR a link that doesn’t work) PLEASE email me or note them here. My email is jacqui@monarch.org.nz

Copy and paste the url (that’s the bit that starts http://…) so that I can find it easy and tell me what’s wrong and how it could be made right.

If a link is broken, use the back arrow to go back to where you were. Copy THAT url into an email, tell me what you were trying to go (e.g. I was looking for wasp information and clicked on the tab “pest information”) and what happened after you clicked on the tab (the page that came up said “404 Not Found”.

Thanks everyone, the new website is happening, it’s a slow process but with your help it is happening much quicker.

Would anyone like to take on the Cinnabar Moth and/or the Magpie Moth? These two are often confused for butterflies, and we get inquiries from people who have spotted them and want to know more.

Are there butterflies (or moths) in your area that are fairly common, and you’d like to see a reference page on them?

    Now we have:

    Norm Twigge – NZ Admirals
    Mike Lusk – Forest Ringlet
    Ange Gibbons – Coppers
    Clair MacDonald – Monarch

We’re keen to have more takers – anyone else want to join us? Thanks all.
