Wintering monarchs

    Hi, I have a few monarchs in large butterfly net frame from monarch trust and wandering is it too cold to release them in Upper Hutt or keep them sheltered over winter, any suggestions much appreciated, I live in Upper Hutt.

    If I have had them longer than 48 hours I usually offer them some nectar before I release them .. honey mixed with warm water is acceptable or i often just pop them on a slice of watermelon lol. Just a bit of sugar to give them some energy, if they don’t want it they won’t feed.

    Thank you, I will release them (4) weather permitting tomorrow or the next dry day. Thanks again for your advice.

    release them. choose a sheltered spot on a relatively calm and warm day … there are a few good days forecast over the next week. They know what they are doing and some will to come back in the spring. You will see some coming out to nectar on good days through winter 🙂
