I have Monarchs but I dont know anything about Yellow Admirals. My brother has both in his Wellington garden. He has noticed that his Yellow Admirals often chase or follow the Monarchs about the place. Does anyone know what this behaviour means please?

More likely the Yellow Admirals doing the chasing are males. Male Yellow Admirals chase many other species and in my Butterfly House in the UK they chased after Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell and our Red Admiral v atalanta. This Male behaviour is seen through all the species mentioned including Monarch males.

They are patrolling their territory. They don’t want to share the nectar sources (flowers) with other species. 🙂 It’s as simple as that.

    “Get outta my space!”
