I'm Blake and im six. We live up in the hills above Papakowhai. most homes are rental properties so have no gardens and we only know of 4 swan plants closeby. We have propagated 27 swan plants that were seedlings from Hamilton in 2016 and the plants are now thriving at 1+ meters tall. We had about 15 chrysalis in 2016. 3 did not hatch and 3 were significantly deformed butterflies. We go to Pauatahanui Primary School and took 2 caterpillars on seedlings and waited for them to hatch in a frog aquarium. The plants and chrysalis get put outside during the day. These two did great. however some chrysalis on the big plant in the ground went black over the cold winter months. On December 23 2017(day we registered) we have more than 35 tiny tiny caterpillars hatched and suspect we will need to relocate some in next two weeks, if anyone can help. About the same amount have been kulled in egg form. we have seen our plants visited 8 times so far. We are looking forward to tagging all our butterflies over summer and hope to help monitor them for a long time. we hope our school may take a more serious interest too... if anyone would like to come and give a talk that would be cool.
