Target has been pulled from the market so value yr container if u have one still n keep it for only stubborn insects like scale n mealy bug – it smells bad but I love the word translaminar within its description ie the spray can move thru the leaf from one side to the other meaning u dnt have to spray under the leaf on top or side is enuff. It was banned like Shield by Govt I believe it was suspected to be carcinogenic – Shield Plus is still allowed but not systemic like Target n Shield they stay in the plant for 10 days continuing to kill sucking insects & poss contaminating nectar whereas Shield Plus & Bravo & Pyrethrum are safe to bees/cats once dry. On any spray their withholding period is in description so obey that withholding period strictly writing down yr date of spray coz u can never remember exactly afterwards. Choose if u want to kill yr aphids or leave them to feed ladybugs n parasitic wasps – if u want to kill them saturate n suffocate them with simple detergent water in a spray bottle n that wont harm yr cats n ladybug nymphs or parasitic wasps unless u saturate them at same time. No withholding period with detergent water n no need to pick cats off its a win win solution altho ladybug nymphs might be hungry if u take out all the aphids……..

Hey Christchurch were gathering orders to make it worthwhile to truck min 48 swan plants by truck into yr city at $6-80 or $7 ea for a 1m to 1.2m leafy plant being picked up tomorrow or Fri here in Hamilton n delivered to a central address Chch next Monday. Its a simple idea & I dnt have time & no need for lots of questions as I need to know yr numbers pronto to assemble in the morning Thurs. I just need yr number reqd n u can pay into my acc once notified n I’ll add all together for trucking. We may repeat in eg 2-3 weeks but this is a hurried gather up coz Matt needs plants quickly n he’ll be the pickup address to be notified. I prefer emailed responses so I can bulk email u the details brucesanson@hotmail.com – those of u following the forum will know me from my prev trip to deliver into yr city 2 weeks ago – this is not a scam. This time the price is made up of $5 per plant plus $1-80 cartage using Headfords Freight based in Oamaru area………..

I have excellent news for anyone who missed my Petone delivery 10 days ago – another 100 swans are being delivered by truck into Wellington this coming week for 15 customers – apparently mostly ordered off 2 Neighbourly posts – so glad we have a budding system/pipeline going now – n we at The Plant Place have bagged another 1500 seedlings since I returned from that trip – a handy resource that were growing all over the soil at my growing block afta blowing everywhere last autumn – might have been sprayed out like weeds had this gud project not arisen this summer……..

For u Chch enthusiasts I now have a quote from Headfords based in Morvern who will backload from Auckland 48 swan plants for $85 which is only $1-77 ea approx. The truck is long haul & a long truck with long trailer so cannot get in n out of eg a dead end street. If time allows they will stop in Chch to unload usually travelling back on a Friday. If they cant stop ie held up or whatever plants go thru to Morvern n then a small truck brings back to Chch on the following Monday. So if u need more plants u need to co ordinate with ea other under those parameters allowing up to a week for replenishing yr supply. 100 plants in one batch is $2-10 per plant. By courier its more like $10 a plant so u dnt want to go there unless u wealthy….

Hi & no I havent received an email from u Caryl – but I sure need some help to find a centralised dropoff or pickup point – I’m wondering if it shud be a motel I might stay at & u can all come in the evening til late – people might think were swapping cannabis plants lol. Or the ferry terminal area perhaps. Anyway text me tonite or tomorrow 0274 821 124 with yr email or we can talk it over I cud give u all the ph nos or emails for u to contact & yr plants cud be free for helping out – I’m really too busy it looks daunting 36 emails & half in yr area – I run a g ctre n understaffed – I must be in Chch Thurs evening to coordinate with 8 young men to lift a heavy fish tank into my hopefully empty by then van so I wont have a day to wait for everyone in Wellington to come at various times around their work – all on the one evening afta traffic has settled might be best. I still have to book a ferry n that may dictate which night or morn I might cross – so tomorrow u’ll all hear from me or us cheers…………..

Awful season for aphids been loving the heat – I’ve had a massive battle keeping them off my 2000 garden centre plants – make me very angry – on your garden plants use a spray bottle eg mt window cleaner bottle – mix detergent with water (stronger than u’d wash yr dishes in) – spray up n down yr branches/leaves totally saturating yr aphids – within a day or two they b black/dead – mop up pockets u missed over following days – if they yellow they still alive & u missed them prev. Inspect yr branch tips reg & get onto them before they multiply – they give birth to live young so explode in nos – they very annoying – make u happy the dead black bodies – as an experiment I’ve tried saturating the cats too – they no die – can even walk on the slippery branches unaffected – u can even clean up badly infested plants with a little persistence – very satisfying……

She’s been at it again – yesterday I invited Char n Al down to save another 40 pillars I’d found (coz our forecast is for 5 frosts in a row this coming week) – but that wasn’t good enuff was it – oh no – they went thru my growing block of 25000 assorted plants row by row & found an extra 150 pillars didn’t they………?

Well done! I was shocked when they told me how many…….

So that’s 190 saved this weekend – on top of 300 last Sat – that’s almost 500 in a week that Char & Al have given an unlikely chance to survive – I say that coz apparently 30 of the 300 did indeed die from being frosted by the -2 & 0 degree frosts late last week – & these little fellows would have had no chance with what’s coming………

Amazing we even found a few tinies 5mm long – so these naughty ladies have still been doing it…….

I’ve booked Char n Al to do it again next May & June – this is great stuff – & they won’t believe me coz it was so warm & sunny while they were – but from 2pm it has become bitterly cold with driving south east rain – u can expect it to hit u in Massey around 3-4pm………

Thanx so much for yr great effort……..

And in between her busy schedule Jan she still found time to rush down to Hamilton on Sat morning to save 300 pillars from the jaws of death – arriving just after 8am with frost still on the ground – many motionless – some had even fallen on the ground still immobile from the snap -2 frost on the Fri morn – followed by chilling rain leading into the 0 degree on the morning she arrived…….

What a saint – whisking them all away to winterless Massey & 5 star accom in the butterfly house – they don’t know how lucky they are – the next frosts early Jun will be -4s – prob unsurvivable for any latelies……….

Come & get them Char – amazingly there are still close to 200 so worth the drive – if u get these thru to butterfly stage u’ll be responsible for another 4000-5000 eggs laid early next season……..

They’re absolutely motionless this morn – cold/wet in the fog – not a good look……..

Come to the nursery first – there are 60 odd here – then u can go straight home from Templeview with the remainder……

Only 20-30 hebes in flower now – fuchsias are still blooming but I’ve never noticed butterflies on them – I never have that many flowers here at any time – more shrubs/trees…….

    U’ve done so well Char – great numbers – what a contribution……..!!

I’ll have a pillar count – most are now hatching/hanging & remainder seem so slow in getting there/hardly eating any plants – I’d be surprised if I count 100 left but u can come get them – sooner or later they’ll get frosted (even if they escaped into their chrysallis) but so far no white frosts to affect them yet……..

I’m not contributing to the survey coz I just don’t know how many I’ve grown & too busy to count them – & many many more than prev yrs anyway – but doing the maths on eg 190 chrysallises taken to the conference plus yr latelies – plus most days picking at least 100 pillars off for sale plants for 2-3 months – had to be at least 3000 pillars & several hundred butterflies must have left these plants so far – yet I hesitate to confidently back that coz I just didn’t ever see clouds of butterflies flying around (yet?)…….

They must just disperse so quickly…….

    Let u know…..

    tbc……..

    I haven’t sold a plant for over a week – it’s all over – I’m not needed any more…….(sob)!

Yellow flowered plant Swallowtails r feeding on in first photos is the Carolina Jessamine climber (scientific name Gelsemium Jessamine & state flower of South Carolina) – it’s evergreen/fast growing & flowers profusely mid-late winter into spring – I’ve never noticed butterflies on it here in the nursery but prob coz none around when it’s winter flowering……..
