Hi Jacqui, We survived OK, as the burst bank on the Edgecumbe side relieved the pressure, (last time, in 2004 we got it and saved Edgecumbe from flooding)!!but we got quite a hammering from cyclone Cook a few days ago. Amazed at how the monarchs survived all the winds, hundreds out today enjoying our bottle brush tree. Carl

I have hundreds of swan plants, many are nice and clean and healthy, but no caterpillars on them, whilst I have a lot of sad looking plants, infested with aphids, (which I deal with digitally, wearing a disposable latex glove), BUT those plants also have lots of caterpillars on too, WHY? why are the crabby looking aphid infested plants the ones which are being “laid” on? whilst the lush healthy plants are ignored ?

I have plenty of swan plant seeds to give away, just send me a S.A.E. and I’ll fill it with seeds free.

    Rural, near Whakatane
    about 10 years or so.
Not as many as usual, the swan plants didn’t do so well this year, but plenty of seeds harvested. They are still breeding and quite a few caterpillars still eating, don’t know if they will survive the cold.
    Media OK.

My five cent’s worth, we have found by trial and error, that they do have to hang, if emerging on a flat surface they are doomed, though I can see that the special circumstances of placing a special cup over each, to allow them to crawl up, may well save them. Not very practical when dozens are involved though. Our solution, clipped by a modified wooden clothes peg, onto an old clothes airer, if not enough “hair” to clip to, a small dab of stringy glue from a hot melt gun, carefully applied, gives a “string” to clip onto. We have “saved” hundreds blown off in strong winds, that way. Carl Watson
