I dont know what is going on in this country. First they import cleopus Japonicus to kill all the buddleia, cannot grow it here now as it just gets desimated. Then I see it being sold back in Mitre 10 in this area again and the plant people dont know anything about that. What is the point of selling it if it will not survive? Now they are looking to import moth plant beetle to kill the moth vine and possibly tweedia and possibly swan plants?

Dont know about delaying emergence but I have kept newly emerged butterflies in a cooler room in house for several days on some flowers in a vase while waiting for rainfall/wind to pass

Be great if something was worked out. I took out our buddleia (large)last year as it had got to the point where even though i was picking off the weevil every morning the leaves were destroyed, each year it got worse, 2 to 4 weevils on most leaves.

Jacqui i emailed the makers of vespex to say awesome and asked about the paper wasp and whether there was anything on the horizon for that and they answered that they were working on this, however the paper wasp is alot trickier to attract (without attracting other species). I used the contact page here https://www.merchento.com/contact.html

These people have made a bait that attracts wasps but not bees, they told me they are working on something for paper wasps, they are much more tricky to make something that will attract only them. https://assets.stuff.co.nz/interactives/special-features/wasp-wipeout/

Only solution I found was to examine the leaves, squish every yellow (young?) blob and then look for the dark brown (adults?) weavils and squish them. Then you get a break for awhile and then start again. They seems to stop coming here when it gets hotter and then come back in Autumn.

There is this one: http://www.greenleafnurseries.co.nz/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=2669 Don’t know whether the butterflys would still be attracted to it. The invasive one is no longer sold in garden centres as it is classified as a weed. I have seen a large bush, non trailing, version growing in Hastings with the yellow and red combination flower.

Summer day here, sunny, hot, windless, something is missing. No monarchs yet, no eggs on plants. Might have saved the buddleia though they are budding, pulled a lot of leaves off with the weevil on.

Pleased to hear there is one Jacquie. Asked at both garden centres and they have not seen any monarchs yet, they attribute to winds weve had or it being too early. I don’t know they have been here from October before in our garden There is an overwintering tree in waipuk, I went up to where I thought it was didn’t see any, may not have been in the correct place though.

Not yet Jacquie. Got 3 swan plants out the back and one in the front. The gale force winds we have had would have made it impossible for them to fly in. The winds have calmed down now in the last two days. Havent seen as many paper wasps now either, there were a lot making nests couple weeks back. We destroyed all the nests. I will go to the garden centre and see if they have any eggs on their plants.

Yes your correct, I had a look and the plants are alternatives for growing and some attract bees not butterflies, there was a note at the end of the email that said she didn’t know if they would be suitable for butterfly. I have found this one recommended though for the monarch and it is Hebe stricta koromiko. There are some alternatives for monarchs on an American site as buddleia is a problem there also unfortunately couldn’t find them online in nz. Kay
