I have had a lot of sucess teacking kids to brush aphids off with a pant brush. With my large scale plantings I cut the parts of the plant off with the aphids and compost bin it. I also fully support bio controls such as those mentioned in this this thread.

    Hi Caryl

Great to hear that your seedling are growing well. I have just started a batch of seeds in christchurch.

I was thinking that maybe your seedlings are now root bound, if they are repotting them will have them take off and hopefully thicken them also.

    Cheers Richard

I think that we are having a very low numbers in overwinter sites because we just dont have any real winter weather for more that a few days and it is mild winter weather also.

The cool thing is allways that having our plants ready for feeding on lets us have a big number of eggs making it to butterflies.

Having now figgered out i can get the seeds pods at the right time to get the mature seeds out reseal and coat them as you suggest, I can give it ago. 3D printing was going to cool and more durable also expressive hasles and not looking very lifelike.

    Hi Carly

Yes if i see eggs I will kill by crushing them so that they are dead as they are alive from before being laid and would stave if just flicked off. To save more plant food for the other cats to grow with. Unfortunately it is a balance of time and numbers. While environmental education using the swan plants is what i put the most of my non work time into. I have have a number of dead council areas in Christchurch that I have self driven and self funded planting projects in. If you are interested these are all public on Facebook under RichardRowe3

    Cheers Richard

    CHRISTCHURCH

Anyone wanting caterpillars is welcome to take them from the public swan plant garden that I have at the Bromley Community Center CNR Bromley and Maces rd.

The garden is at the back of the building by the playground.

Please do not bring caterpillars all the plants I have down there and all the ones I grow and add to the garden get striped in 2 week cycles. This is so extensive that I have to kill smaller caterpillars weekly so the larger ones will make it.

Thats great news, we had a burst and then a nothing for a while. Also a good thing as the plants are able to get bigger and handle a larger lot of catipulars

How can we put photos of our projects swan plant gardens in forum posts. I can see some of your’s Jacqui but see no way of adding them. Also how can we have a photo like you rather than a pattern, which makes it rather hard to related to the other people.

May I suggest that if you have a large amount of caterpillars that you kill off anyything samller than 2/3 full size or so. That way you will not run out of food and you and let the seeds mature, so that you may if you wish to grow a lot more plants next years. That way a lot more monarchs will survive.

Hi What area are you in? I have a swan plant garden at the Bromley community center. I found some small like 5mm caterpillars the other day, so i expecting a fresh out break of munching. You or anyone else in Christchurch are welcome to take catipulars or just come for a look. The garden is around the back beside the playground.
