South Island lichen moth

This species resembles the North Island lichen moth (Declana atronivea) but has fewer and coarser wing markings. It is only found in the South Island and on Stewart Island.

Look for it on our $100 note alongside a mōhua (yellowhead bird) with a backdrop of Fiordland National Park.

On the forest floor in a loosely spun cocoon encrusted with dirt.

Dark brown patches on a silver background. Rest with their wings in a tent-like posture.
