These cute little organza bags covered with silver butterflies will make sure that your swan plant seed "stays at home".
Be a Responsible Swan Plant Grower and don't let the seed go wild! You can collect it and replant for next year, or dispose of it if it's not needed. Using these seed pod bags is easy:
1. Put one over the maturing seed pod and pull the drawstrings firmly around the stem.
2. Leave in place until the pod pops open and the seed is loose in the bag.
3. Cut the pod's stem, and empty the seed. The silk or coma is great to add to compost.
Monarch caterpillars were once a great biocontrol for the swan plants/milkweed; one caterpillar can eat 20 or 30 leaves as it grows from a tiny egg to a caterpillar about 4 cm long in a few weeks. However, with the huge increase in the number of pest wasps taking the caterpillars to feed to the juvenile wasps the milkweed ecosystem has become out of balance.
Responsible Swan Plant Growers don't want the milkweed to become a pest plant.
