Blackish larvae feed on plantains and possibly other herbaceous plants.

Varying forewing colour and pattern. Males have longer, narrower forewings, with scent scales at the end of their abdomen. November to March. May fly or be disturbed from vegetation by day. Attracted to light at night. Numbers have declined since the 19th century.
